Sailing might seem like a scary experience when you are traveling with a child. It is nothing to be afraid of, but again - it is not to take for granted. Being overly optimistic about it or not worrying at all puts you and your kid in not-so-safe place, therefore - we encourage taking things seriously and thinking about every possible hazard and how to prevent it.

Here are some tips on how to travel with your infant and how to stay safe!

1. LIFEJACKET

Just like every single person on a boat, your kid needs a lifejacket as well! It is advised to wait for a kid to hit at least 8kg for it to be able to wear it properly. Many lifejackets for kids have extra cushion so it supports their head and keeps them above the surface of the water and sometimes they come with extra crotch strap so it is even more secure.

2. DESIGNATED SPACE

Always have a designated space for your kid on your boat. In any case of emergency or scenario where you need to be “all-hands-involved”, this way you will be able to safely seat your baby without worrying and perform necessary actions in order to continue your trip. Be careful to secure the area so the kid won’t be able to slip, fall or move too much around the boat. Keep in mind, this “designated space” is just for cases where you have to be involved and there is no other person to take care of a child, otherwise we do not advise leaving your child alone in the area.

3. SHADE

While on a boat, overheating and heatstroke are two conditions to be extra careful of! Provide some shade for yourself as well, but especially for your kid. Little ones are specially sensitive to heat and last thing you want is to stress about them getting sick while on board. Take plenty of sunscreen with you, hat, shades or even an extra beach umbrella!

4. PLANNING

In the end, it’s all about planning! Your route should not be too risky when you have a kid on board. Avoid boating rush by planning and starting your day as early as possible or by waiting other boaters to get back in the afternoon. Undock while temperatures are cooler, smoother water etc. Be careful of every possible weather outcome because you don’t want to get stuck in the thunderstorm out on the sea. Be extra careful about the weather when traveling with a child.

5. SUPPLIES

Pack plenty of supplies! Baby food, diapers, juice, toys and whatever else you might need for the day! We suggest putting it all in waterproof bag in case of it getting wet (and that is very probable!) and even packing “waterproof products” such as diapers (known as swimmers). Go safe when packing for a child, maybe even overpack. You can never be too careful!

6. FUN ON AND IN THE WATER

Kids love playing! Pack toys to keep them entertained on the board! It is a good idea to pack waterproof toys and not to carry ones that are too small (like pebbles etc). Of course, when you dock your boat you will want to swim with you child, so make sure to pack floaty, sand toys etc. as well!
